A Refutation of Optimism

If the probability of an event is greater than zero, and does not decrease over time, the event will occur.

The world's population continues to grow. Our water and air become more and more polluted. The probability of ecological disaster increases day by day. Sooner or later disaster will occur.

The nations build more and more weapons, weapons of a larger and larger scale. The probability of global war increases day by day. Sooner or later war will occur.

Optimism is a deception foisted on us by an unsustainable system in order to persuade us to continue working for the system. Don't be fooled.

Critics have been pointing out that industrial civilization is unsustainable for more than a century. An unsustainable form of life cannot be sustained. It will end. Since we insist on remaining in a state of denial and pretending we can sustain the unsustainable, it will end badly.

The optimists point out that so far the calamities predicted by the pessimists have not occurred. Apparently we must have a catastrophe in order to persuade us that our way of life is leading to catastrophe.

Our rulers intend to go on increasing the magnitude and scope of unsustainable systems. As the systems grow, the magnitude of the inevitable catastrophe grows.

The timing of disaster is a matter of probability. No one can predict exactly what will happen and when it will happen. But if the probability of an event is greater than zero, and does not decrease over time, the event will happen. That is certain.
